Getting The Best Job In The World

Tourism Queensland has announced the best job in the world concept and if you want to win, you need to fulfill some basic criteria and know how to market yourself… So, how on earth do you get the Best Job in the World?

1. Are you of age?

You need to be at least 18 years old.

2. You need to…

Fill in the application form, create a video, submit!

3. Do you qualify?

They’re specifically looking for people who are charismatic… you don’t have to be the best looking person (of course, that helps). Briefly explain why you’re the best person for the job and demonstrate your knowledge of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s stated that applicants need to have an adventurous attitude, passion for the outdoors and good communication skills – read their application form for more details.
Most importantly, create an entertaining video.

4. Your Video Has To Be Awesome!

Now, it’s very clear – they are looking for an entertaining video. If you cancreate a memorable 1 minute video, you significantly increase your chances of getting picked!
Here’s some basic tips: Your video recording has to be clear and of good quality, your lighting has to be bright enough so people can see you and your sound has to be and audible in the video to hear what you’re trying to say.

5. How To Win The Job

What are they looking for? If they’re paying so much money (oh yeah, it’s a LOT), they’re not going to be hiring someone who is recording a video with a laptop in his bedroom!
Put some effort in the recording because this is Tourism Queensland – they WANT to promote the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. So you need to be able to articulate your feelings clearly, you need to be able to think of ways to promote the islands – it’s not about you.
Demonstrate your knowledge (if you have any) about reefs, if you don’t have a lot of knowledge about it, tell them what you’re going to do about it. For example… “I may not know a lot about reefs but I know how to share what I’ve learned in a fun way in the videos” or something like that.

6. What To Avoid In Recording Your Video

Since you need to submit a video in order for you to be accepted, here are some more tips for you so you increase your chances of being selected.
  • Avoid sounding like you are reading from a script
While I don’t speak for Tourism Queensland, I’m pretty sure they want someone to blog pretty much unscripted but yet entertaining and providing value at the same time. That won’t happen with reading a script – information, maybe… but zero entertainment value.
  • Avoid the dark
When you record your video, make sure it’s bright and you are seen clearly. If it’s recorded in a dark room, get the lights on. When you watch yourself on your own video and it’s dim, don’t just leave it as it is… get out of your room, find a really bright spot (maybe just outside your home in daytime) and record yourself!
Very importantly, make sure you look at what’s being recorded as well. If the background distracts from you or the video is blinding to the normal user – re-shoot your video.
  • Avoid avoiding
This is NOT the time you want to be camera shy. If you’re camera shy, you really shouldn’t be applying for the job in the first place. Place yourself in front of the camera, be seen clearly – you may need to have someone help you with the camera – and don’t be afraid of talking into the camera!
If you have 10 seconds saying “Hi, I want to apply for this job because I’m great with communicating with people” [END VIDEO] Guess what? You’re not great with communicating with people on video and most likely, they’re not going to pick you at all!
  • Avoid talking about yourself too much
While it’s important that you showcase your talents and abilities so that Tourism Queensland picks you, you need to be able to answer what they are trying to achieve in their promotional efforts.
They’re not going to be hiring a person whose going to be in front of the camera for 6 months talking about nothing but themselves.

7. What To Do When You Win The Job

Come back here and say hi to me :) After you’ve done that – when you get the job, you’re going to have a significant increase in popularity. What you can do after you get the job and have finished with it… largely depends on how you have portrayed yourself in the videos.
Make it a point to promote the subject in the video – not yourself and you’ll be able to make yourself look better than if you had the videos all about yourself! Tell them the exact reason why they should hire you and why your skills fit perfectly for the job.
